Seeking a job in today’s job market is not an easy task for every individual. Whenever you apply for a job it is a must that you approach the company along with a precise resume and a CV (Curriculum Vitae). These have to be perfect as they make the first impression of you as a candidate in the minds of the employer. A good resume and a CV can boost your chances of recruitment by nearly 40%.

What is a resume?

A resume is a brief summary of your education, work history and accomplishments in your professional and academic life. It is the most basic document when applying for a job. In the job market today, employers receive hundreds of job applications daily. To make your application stand out the resume should be as concise as possible, typically one to two pages in length. It should have accomplishments and education in a chronological way and such that it suits the job profile that you are applying for (eg. If you are applying for a job at an educational institute, then you must give priority to qualifications and experience in the teaching sector).

What is CV?

CV is a detailed document highlighting the professional and academic history which include experience like work experience, awards, scholarships, course work, research or academic and non-academic projects along with publications with journals. In a CV one may also include his personal information and hobbies and interests along with volunteering work which you have done. A CV is a detailed overview of the above stated headings.

  5. Extra Curricular activities.
  6. Hobbies and interests.

Difference between Resume and CV?

  1. A resume is a summary of your skills in one or two pages however a CV can stretch more than two pages.
  2. Resume is generally required for applying for a job at an industry, nonprofit industry and public sector and a CV is generally used for applying for jobs at a academic fellowship and grant.
  3. The length of the CV depends upon your experience, your academic publications, research etc.
  4. After getting one year of experience in the industry we should first put up our industry experience and in the later section we should put up academic qualifications however in a CV we should always start with the educational background.

The usage patterns across the globe:

  1. In countries like India, Australia and South Africa, the priority is given to the resume and CV interchangeably. Resume is used in applying jobs in the private sector and then CV is generally required in the public sector jobs.
  2. In US and Canada, the resume is a preferred document and the CV is used for applying in research oriented or academic roles.
  3. In the European continent, CV’s prevail and there is more preference for a CV for all positions in academic and industry related jobs and fellowships.
